OUR MISSION
The Club's decision to operate as a non-profit underscored the Club's deep commitment to judo’s guiding principle of “mutual benefit and welfare” - using the sport of judo to help build character as well as physical skills, and to help improve the community as well as the individual.
It is the mission of South Hills Judo Club to do the following:
- To be an asset to the hilltop communities of Pittsburgh’s South Hills by providing a safe, fun place for children and families to study judo, which includes the important benefits of physical and mental discipline, self-respect and self-control, as well as the physical fitness that results from hard work and training with peers. The skills we share at our club can inform and enhance their education now and their careers later in life;
- To offer high-quality judo instruction, on a sliding fee scale basis for individuals and families;
- To NEVER turn any child away due to financial reasons;
- To promote high school graduation through the Club’s Degrees to Diplomas Program, a partnership with Allegheny Youth Development on Pittsburgh’s Northside, which strives to improve academic performance by installing self-control in middle and high school students who are at high risk for dropping out. Coming from profoundly disadvantaged homes, these young people cannot change their difficult circumstances, but they can develop the skills to make them more resilient
and better problem solvers, and to help them succeed in
school and life.
In 2009 South Hills Judo Club will embark upon an ambitious plan to expand its community mission through increased promotion of its programs and active recruitment of participants for its youth judo classes. These classes will offered at low- or no-cost to residents of the Hilltop Communities. The goal is to promote physical fitness, self-discipline, team building and self-confidence in boys and girls throughout some of our city’s most at risk and poorest neighborhoods.
