WELCOME TO SOUTH HILLS
JUDO CLUB

South Hills Judo Club is a nonprofit organization, located in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh, whose mission is to positively affect the character, fitness, and lives of its members and the community through the principle of "mutual benefit and welfare".

Getting started in Judo is easy. No special clothes are required, although sweats are suggested. Come to one of the classes, sign up and get on the mat. The instructors will teach you safe falling, matwork, and standing techniques. We have instructors with a wide variety of experience teaching and competing — the whole club will help you get in shape and/or ready for competition.

At South Hills Judo, we offer opportunities for a diverse community. From competitive sport Judo; to Judo for self defense and fitness; to the exciting sport of Muay Thai; Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu;to a Mixed Martial Arts training package.

If you wish to study judo, but are unable to pay dues, PLEASE ask about scholarships, family and collegiate discounts. NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR FINANCIAL REASONS!

But the program we are most proud of is the Degrees to Diplomas Program.

To promote high school graduation through the Club’s Degrees to Diplomas Program, a partnership with Allegheny Youth Development on Pittsburgh’s Northside, which strives to improve academic performance by installing self-control in middle and high school students who are at high risk for dropping out. Coming from profoundly disadvantaged homes, these young people cannot change their difficult circumstances, but they can develop the skills to make them more resilient and better problem solvers, and to help them succeed in school and life.

Degrees to Diplomas was selected as the name because it signifies the progression of the South Hills Judo Club’s non-profit mission of serving underprivileged youth.  Degrees refers to the level of black belt degrees one can attain through the study of judo, the highest being the 10th level.  And diplomas are the penultimate goal for these young men:  minimally, a high school diploma, but perhaps even an undergraduate or graduate-level diploma from a college or university.

The program will build on the youth judo program’s success in enhancing the physical, behavioral and emotional strength of the participants by helping them to strengthen their mental and intellectual abilities through intensive tutoring and homework help.

Degrees to Diplomas represents a true grassroots effort developed and staffed by the volunteer board members of the South Hills Judo Club.

In 2009 South Hills Judo Club will embark upon an ambitious plan to expand its community mission through increased promotion of its programs and active recruitment of participants for its youth judo classes. These classes will offered at low- or no-cost to residents of the Hilltop Communities. The goal is to promote physical fitness, self-discipline, team building and self-confidence in boys and girls throughout some of our city’s most at risk and poorest neighborhoods.
