THE HISTORY OF SOUTH HILLS JUDO CLUB

1945–Mr. Nick Zaffuto began Judo in Pearl Harbor, while a member of the United States Marine Corps. Later Mr. Z began the first Judo Club in Pittsburgh at the downtown YMCA. Over time, Nick began Judo classes in many Pittsburgh area YMCA's. He also was one of the founding fathers of several of the first independent Judo clubs in Pittsburgh, the Judo School of Pittsburgh and the Judo Academy of Pittsburgh.

1968–South Hills Judo Club founded by Nick Zaffuto

1972– Colleen Murphy began Judo at the South Hills Judo Club under the tutelage of Mr Z

1978– South Hills Judo moved to its current location in Carrick, PA.

1992– South Hills Judo Club hosted the 1992 Senior National Championships and had five players on the USJI Senior Elite Roster.

1996–South Hills Judo Club member, Marisa Pedulla, represents the United States at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta Georgia.

2002–South Hills Judo Club organizises as a 501(c)3 Non Profit Organization.

2004–South Hills Judo Club forms a partnership with Allegheny Youth Development to provide afterscholol judo programs to
at risk youth.

2006Sit-Dragon Leg MuayThai/Pittsburgh Muay Thai begins training at South Hills Judo Club.

2006–The Degrees to Diplomas program begins.

2008–South Hills Judo Club offer BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU through a partnership with Team Balance Pittsburgh

2009–South Hills Judo Club,Sit-Dragon Leg MuayThai/Pittsburgh Muay Thai and Team Balance Pittsburgh offer Pittsburgh Mixed Martial Arts, a joint training program in all phases of MMA fighting for sport. fitness and self defense. LEARN MORE

Currently, the South Hills Judo Club has over 70 members of various ages and abilities training in many martial arts.
